Workshop for Voices. Sing a Gregorian Mass.

Crewkerne Methodist Church, 36 South Street, Crewkerne. TA18 8DB

10am - 4.30pm

£15 (non-members); £10 (EMF members); £5 (18-25's).

Organiser: Elizabeth Gowers / dorset@swemf.org.uk

The Workshop

We tend to know Gregorian as “plainchant”, but it is often translated into modern 5-line staves. We shall cover Gregorian 4-line and neume notation, by learning the more lyrical chants which developed in the 13th and 14th centuries. You will learn as you go along from the chants for a full mass. Introit, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Offertory, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei.

The course leader will briefly explain the order of service as we go along. Those not familiar with Roman Catholic liturgy will recognise the format as very similar to Anglican “Sung Eucharist.”

We will end the day with the usual SWEMF recital by singing through the complete mass.

The Leader

Tony and Sue Berridge lived in France for 13 years and during that time became members of Angers Cathedral choir (although they remained Anglican). Tony took a course in Gregorian chant with the “Schola Gregorienne du Mans” and from time to time sang masses with a small Gregorian group section.

The Venue

Coffee, tea and biscuits will be provided in the morning and afternoon breaks. There are pubs and cafes in Crewkerne for lunch, or please bring a packed lunch. The venue, which is fully accessible, will be supervised at lunchtime and belongings may be left there safely.

Crewkerne railway station is about 20 minutes walk from the church.

The two main car parks in the centre of town are limited to 3 hours and 4 hours. Long-stay car parks in West Street and Henhayes.
