Songs for These Distracted Times - In Support of Ukraine
St Andrew's Church, Yeovil BA20 2BQ
7.30pm
Organiser: yeovilchamberchoir@hotmail.com
This programme, in the penitential season of Lent celebrates the life of Thomas Tomkins, regarded often as a rather serious and reactionary composer, who lamented the “state of things” in the dark Tudor times in which he lived. There are many parallels with contemporary life, and it feels appropriate now to dedicate this performance to the support of what will come to be seen as a major humanitarian crisis for the innocent citizens of Ukraine.
Music by Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons, Henry Purcell, Claudio Monteverdi, Thomas Tomkins, and some (perhaps) lesser known composers Pierre Certon and Pierre Passereau.
The choral items will be interspersed with keyboard items by Thomas Tomkins, François Couperin, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Claude Debussy.
