The Workshop
The 16th and early 17th centuries saw a flowering of secular song both in France and in Britain. In this workshop we will spend the morning in France, exploring works by Sermisy and Jannequin with texts ranging from the tragic to the plain saucy, and the afternoon in England looking at songs by some of the lesser-known contemporaries of Dowland, such as Pilkington and Ford. And since at this period there was no strict demarcation of ‘instrumental music’ – indeed, some of the best-known songs have their roots in instrumental dances – there will be plenty of opportunity for players of recorders, viols and renaissance wind to join in.
Pitch will be A = 440 to accommodate Renaissance winds.
Please bring a music stand if you need one. Music scores will be available to download roughly a fortnight beforehand. Tea, coffee etc will be provided before the workshop and during breaks. It is helpful if you can bring your own mug.
Please bring a packed lunch. Alternatively, The Odd Wheel pub is opposite the Hall and it’s best to book as it is quite popular. The village shop is also more or less opposite the hall where snacks/ pasties etc are normally available. There is also a café down at the beach.
