Margaret Phillips, described as ‘one of Britain's most outstanding concert organists and teachers’, will give a concert of organ music at St Cuthbert’s Church in Wells. Margaret will play both the church organ and the Goetze and Gwynn ‘Tudor’ Wingfield organ.
In the first half, the Tudor organ will be played and music will include Missa in die Sanctae Trinitas by Philip ap Rhys (fl. 1530) with voices; and Gloria tibi Trinitas by John Blithemann (c.1525–1591).
The Wingfield organ was built by Dominic Gwynn in 2001. It is based on an early 16th century soundboard found in Suffolk, and on the earliest English pipework still extant and 16th century Spanish pipes and mechanism. The discovery of the soundboard, together with knowledge of the surviving music, information held in contemporary records and evidence of fragments from other organs, gave enough information to make an instrument which reflects 16th century English practice and design.
After an interval with tea and cake, Margaret will move to the church organ to play works by Bach and Klaas Bolt.
All proceeds will go to support the church.
