Marc-Antoine Charpentier′s Mass for Four Choirs
directed by Robert Hollingworth

This magnificent work was written c.1672 for four choirs, each with their own instrumental ensemble. The Festival will provide instrumentalists for the workshop.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704) was born and worked in Paris. As a young man he spent a couple of years in Rome, absorbing the style of Carissimi and of Roman polychoral music. He copied out a good deal of this music, including a mass for four choirs by Beretta, and brought it with him when he returned to Paris in 1670. His four-choir mass, written two years later, is strongly influenced by the lyrical legato style of Carissimi and his Roman contemporaries.
