The Workshop

The great Andrea Gabrieli was composer and first organist at St. Mark's in Venice from 1566 until his death in 1585. His large-scale works have also a great intimacy and subtlety. He was a pupil of Orlandus Lassus, maestro di cappella of St Marks, and he would have known the works of Adrian Willaert, who was Maestro di Capella at St. Mark's from 1527 to 1562.

Philip Thorby will be exploring some of Andrea's twelve-part works, including the psalm setting Benedicam Dominum, the masterly hymn to music Cantiam di Dio, and (if the forces are suitable) his immense, four-choir, sixteen-part Gloria.

Singers, cornetts, sackbuts, recorders, curtals, strings and continuo are all welcome, but please note that there will not be C-clefs for all the pieces, and continuo players will be working from scores or figured bass parts. The pitch will be A440.

The Tutor

The musical director, Philip Thorby, is one of the country’s leading performers and teachers in the sphere of Renaissance and Baroque music. He was Emeritus Fellow in Early Music at Trinity Laban Conservatoire London and he both teaches and performs widely throughout the world. He is founder and director of the Renaissance ensemble, Musica Antiqua of London, and remains at the forefront of research-based performance of 16th Century music. Recordings by Musica Antiqua of London are on Naxos and Signum labels.
