The Workshop

Works in 12 to 24 parts by Andrea Gabrieli, 1533-1585, and his nephew Giovanni Gabrieli, 1557-1612, and by Andrea’s contemporary Claudio Merulo, all of whom worked at St Mark’s in Venice.

Applications welcome from players of Renaissance wind instruments – shawms, sackbutts, cornetts, curtals, recorders, crumhorns (may not be feasible for all pieces) etc.

Please ask the organiser about any instruments not listed above.
Pitch will be A=440. Please bring your own music stand.
Players should be able to sight-read a part with a high level of accuracy on their chosen instruments. This is not a suitable course for complete beginners.

The Tutor

Tim has studied, performed and tutored Renaissance wind and brass for thirty years, exploring this repertoire with his colleagues in the York Waits.

He frequently gives early music demonstrations and leads performance workshops, including at Chalemie and HISS.

The Venue

Photo of churchSt Mark’s Methodist Church, Gloucester Rd, Cheltenham, GL51 8PX.

This is the venue we used some three years ago, not the place used last year.
Please do not confuse it with St Marks C of E which is fairly close by.

Cheltenham Spa train station is a very short walk away.
There are a few parking spaces immediately in front of the church, and some more spaces to the rear of the building.
Parking on nearby roads may be limited to 4 hours in places, but this restriction does not apply in all cases on Saturdays.

There is a mini-Tesco and a variety of cafes near the station.
