A concert performance of the very first English opera composed by John Blow.
Goddess Venus loves the young hunter Adonis. Yet, how to be certain of a mortal's eternal fidelity, however enamoured? Their love will undergo painful hardships. Under the pen of Blow, the gracious pastoral turns into a true tragedy, interrupted in true Restoration style with a comic scene of Cupid teaching the young Cupids.
To support this opera which lasts about half an hour, the first half of the programme will include another work composed for the entertainment of King Charles II, an Ode by Pelham Humfrey for the then King's birthday in May 1673. There will also be some instrumental music from The South West Baroque Players.
The Winkleigh Singers will be joined by The South West Baroque Players led by Michael Williamson, playing authentic instruments, and John Marston, harpsichord, in this historic opera.
