Ave Maria - Music for the Queen of Heaven

All Saints Church, Pembroke Road, Clifton. BS8 3ED

8pm

£10 at the door. (Student £5, accompanied U16s free.)

NOVA's next concert is on September 24th. For a theme, we return to the Virgin Mary. Her transformation from the enigmatic figure in the Gospels into a radiant cultural and spiritual global icon made her the inspiration for painters, sculptors, poets and composers from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to the present day. The programme is structured around the astonishing Mass setting by Guillaume de Machaut written before 1350. La Messe de Nostre Dame is the first known mass setting by a single, named composer. Its unfamiliar spiky rhythms and unexpected harmonies provide dramatic contrast with the pure intensity of Josquin's Ave Maria, Virgo Serena and the rich flowing polyphony of Lassus and Guerrero. Some English music too - by Richard Dering and John Sheppard. As usual, in the wonderful acoustic of All Saints Clifton BS8 3ED. Sunday September 24th. The music begins at 8.00pm. Entry by programme at the door £10. Students £5 and accompanied Under-16s free.
