‘A notorious swearer and blasphemer’ – the sad life and wonderful music of Thomas Weelkes (died 1623)
St Mary’s church, 1 Church Rd, Yatton, Bristol BS49 4HH
10:00 - 16:30
£18 for members of SWEMF and other EMFs, £20 for non-members.
Organiser: Jenny Tribe
The anniversary of Weelkes’s death has been somewhat overshadowed by that of Byrd, but although now best known as a composer of madrigals, he also wrote an enormous amount of music for the services of the English church, much of which remains unpublished. In this workshop we will explore both sacred and secular works, making use, where appropriate, of the wonderful space provided by Yatton church for antiphonal singing. Singers in all voices are welcome, as are viols and recorders. Pitch for the day will be A = 440.
