Music to Die For
All Saints, Pembroke Road, Clifton BS8 3ED
8pm
Wonderful music itself, but on the surprisingly varied them of human mortality.
Some big motets by Gombert and Lassus, madrigals by Arcadelt and the little-known Maddalena Casulana. Three motets lamenting the death of heroes from the Old Testament, including Planxit autem David, believed to be by Josquin. Three of Gesualdo's set of twenty-seven Responsaries for Holy Week, their angular chromaticism powerfully portraying Christ's Passion. And then some very jolly medieval songs warning people of the dreadful things to come if they don't amend their sinful ways!
