‘Spanish and Latin American Renaissance Music’ - A Workshop for Voices and Instruments

St Mary’s Church, Yatton. BS49 4HH

10am - 4.30pm

£20 (any EMF), £25 (non-members)

Organiser: Althea Hamlyn / secretary@swemf.org.uk - 01453 811723 / 07752 921118

The music for this workshop is a mixture of works by composers, all of whom have a connection to Spain or Latin America. As music was developed, and the New World discovered, Spanish composers travelled over and took up positions of musical authority in large South American cities, composing for the church and the people who frequented them. This music is a glimpse into that time and a chance for us to work on how singers and instrumentalists interact. There may even be some percussion!

The music will include:

  • Anon: Hanacpachap Cussicuinin

  • Fransicso Valls: Missa a 6

  • Pucanol: Tantum Ergo

  • Padilla: Ego Flos Campi

Mark is a young professional Conductor, Countertenor and Bassoonist living in Stroud. He graduated from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 2019 with First Class Honours, having been awarded two scholarships to study. He specialised in historical bassoons and is the founder and musical director of Ensemble La Notte and the English Wind Consort.

He freelances as a period bassoonist with many UK-based early music ensembles, including the Academy of Ancient Music and the Instruments of Time and Truth.

He has a strong background in the world of choral music and for several years sang with the choirs of Worcester Cathedral, Birmingham Cathedral and Magdalen College, Oxford.

Since 2022 he has been the Director of Music at Pembroke College, Oxford.

Relatively recently he founded, and directs, the Standish Consort, an alumni choir of Oxford University, based in Gloucestershire. The group performs locally and in late June will be touring in Rhineland.

St Mary’s Church Yatton is within walking distance of Yatton station, on the Bristol – Weston-super-Mare line, and has ample private parking. We have access to a kitchen; tea and coffee will be provided and there are shops and pubs nearby.

Pitch will be A=440. Instrumentalists, please bring your own music stands.

The fee for the workshop is £20 for EMF members and £25 for non-members.
