SWEMF would like to invite you to take part in a workshop for singers, players of renaissance wind instruments, strings and recorders. The workshop will take place on Saturday May 25th 2024 at Thorverton Parish Church of St. Thomas of Canterbury EX5 5NU, from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Arrival and coffee from 10am. Details on parking etc. to follow.

David Hatcher studied viola da gamba with Charles Medlam and recorder with Philip Thorby at Trinity College of Music, London. He has recorded with Evelyn Tubb, The Consort of Music, I Fagiolini and the Bach Collegium of Japan, and appeared with Fretwork, The Globe Theatre, Musica Antiqua of London and with Glyndebourne Opera. He teaches at many courses, including the Early Music Summer School and the Easter Early Music Course in Monmouth.

The music studied at the workshop will be based on the musical legacy of Girolamo Savonarola, a Dominican Friar who denounced the luxury and debauchery of the corrupted Catholic Church. He preached that Florence had no other king but Christ. In 1497, he commanded citizens of Florence to sell their jewellery and finery to give money to the poor, and to cast all manner of luxuries onto a ‘Bonfire of the Vanities’ in the Piazza della Signoria.

In 1498 he was arrested for heresy, imprisoned in a cramped cell of the Palazzo Vecchio, and tortured. On May 23rd 1498 he was hanged and burned in the Piazza della Signoria, and his ashes were cast into the River Po.

Whilst imprisoned, he wrote two extensive meditations: ‘Infelix ego’ based on Psalm 50 and ‘Tristitia obsedit me’ on Psalm 30. The texts were smuggled out and became the basis of other most moving motets of the following century by composers such as Byrd, Lassus, Willaert and Josquin.

During the day we shall be using the new musical editions by David Hatcher which he prepared during the Covid-19 epidemic as part of his Music Minus One project.

The fee for the workshop is £20 for EMF members and £24 for non-members.
