An illustrated talk by Elizabeth Dodd
Knowing a little about the steps of dances such as minuets can really illuminate how the music of those dances should be played, in terms of both tempo and phrasing. In this video Elizabeth Dodd discusses the relationship between the dances and the music, and demonstrates some of the dance steps to illustrate the connection. Elizabeth will be known to many people as a regular workshop tutor and a teacher at the Norvis and Higham Hall summer schools; she is uniquely well qualified to enlighten us on this topic, being both an early dance expert and a viol player.
Copyright notice: The music used to illustrate the dances in this talk is played with midi files created in Sibelius. The one exception is an extract from: “Can she excuse my wrongs”, performed by Anne Sofie von Otter – see credit in the video description on YouTube.
